Director, producer, GRAMMY®-nominated poet, acclaimed author, and Tupac Shakur biographer Kevin Powell joined the Bunche Center alongside writer and producer Evangeline Lawson for a screening of their documentary When We Free the World, an exploration of Black manhood, healing, vulnerability, and transformation in America. Followed by a dynamic conversation moderated by Dr. Marcus Hunter, UCLA Scott Waugh Endowed Chair in the Social Sciences Division and Professor of Sociology & African American Studies, the event examined the role storytelling, art, and public dialogue play in confronting some of the most urgent social and political questions facing Black communities today. Through film and conversation, Powell and Lawson pushed audiences to think critically about how race, gender, trauma, media representation, and structural inequality shape understandings of Black manhood, while also emphasizing the importance of creating spaces for vulnerability, growth, and collective care.
