Since its establishment, the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies has led the nation in supporting students and faculty in the study of Black life, hosting scholarly events relevant to Black life in Los Angeles, and producing action-oriented research that spans every field of scholarly inquiry, ranging from micro-biology to musicology. Currently, the Bunche Center is home to the award-winning Million Dollar Hoods project, which uses big data to map the fiscal and human cost of mass incarceration in Los Angeles. In collaboration with community advocates and policy makers, Million Dollar Hoods is helping to reimagine public safety in Los Angeles. Giving to the Bunche Center advances Black Studies as a field of research that improves the conditions of Black life and transforms the world in which we live.
Your support of this program empowers the next generation of scholars and change agents that are leading cutting-edge research to improve the conditions for Black life. Bunche Fellows Program is one of the Center’s most ambitious efforts to train cohorts of scholars from across the academic career arc and from disciplines throughout the UCLA campus. Each year, BFP funds 10 undergraduate and 10 graduate students as well as two postdoctoral scholars to study the conditions of Black life.
Your support of the Discretionary Fund allows The Bunche Center to continue serving as the intellectual hub for Black scholarship at the university by providing research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, supporting the research initiatives of affiliated faculty, fostering campus diversity, bridging the academy and community, and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration. The Center’s success is firmly rooted in its origins in 1969 as a research initiative dedicated to the study of Black life. The Bunche Center is a national model of scholarly engagement, mentorship, and community activism.
At The Ralph J. Bunche Library and Media Center, we collect primary source materials relevant to Black lives. Primary source materials document Black perspectives, achievements and contributions that may otherwise be lost and destroyed. The library currently has more than 8,000 books and numerous archives holdings. Together we can make sure our library remains a vibrant and impactful resource for Black scholarship.
This fund will support all research, fellowships, and programming related to the Hip Hop Initiative at UCLA.
There are many ways to support the Bunche Center. Learn more about ways to make a donation that works best for you.
In writing a will or living trust, you can specify that you would like your estate to benefit UCLA. Your bequest gift may enable you to make long-term support to the Bunche Center, while at the same time allowing you to achieve your short-term financial, philanthropic, and other goals.
Giving land, farms, personal residences, and rental or commercial property, either in its entirety or in part, can benefit the Bunche Center while providing you relief from capital gains taxes. For residential properties, it is possible to arrange a sizable tax deduction by deeding a home to UCLA, while continuing to occupy the property for life.
The Bunche Center gratefully accepts donations of materials that support the academic, teaching and research mission of the University. The University receives a wide variety of such gifts, including rare books and manuscripts, works of art, equipment and other items of value.
We welcome gifts of copyrights, patents, royalties, licenses, and technical data. The tax and legal provisions that govern these gifts vary according to the type of property.
Appreciated stocks and bonds are a popular asset donated to UCLA by alumni and friends. Securities can be transferred directly from your brokerage account to the university’s account. You can download the appreciated stock giving form here.
The easiest way to double – or even triple – your contribution to the Bunche Center is to request a matching gift from your employer. Thousands of companies nationwide support their workforce by making such gifts to the organizations and institutions their employees care about. To see if yours is one, check our database of matching gift companies before making your donation.
A pledge is a statement of intention to make a gift to UCLA. Donors who seek to defer the bulk of their giving until a future date, or who want to give via installments over time, may use this giving strategy. This allows donors to promise a gift in the future and make payments over time.
