California Task Force on Reparations
Providing Data, Analysis, and Community Insight to Guide California's Reparations Policy

Shaping California’s Path to Reparations Through Research and Community Partnership

As the research partner to the California Task Force on Reparations, BPP played an essential role by providing issue-area expertise, research, and community engagement support to help them develop a nearly 500-page reparations report, including policy proposals. Through hosting community listening sessions and conducting a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative analysis, BPP provided vital information to help ensure the Task Force’s recommendations were informed by the lived experiences and aspirations of Black communities. By actively contributing to this historic initiative, BPP builds on the Bunche Center’s legacy of putting a spotlight on Black life to advance justice, equity and healing from the enduring impact of slavery and systemic racism in California.

As a follow-up to this historic work, BPP will conduct a new statewide survey in early 2026 to gauge how public attitudes toward reparations have evolved and to capture what Black Californians believe are the most urgent priorities for repair, justice, and investment moving forward.

California’s reparations process represents a historic opportunity to confront the legacy of slavery and systemic racism with data, accountability, and community leadership. BPP’s partnership ensured that this work was not only evidence-based but also rooted in the lived realities of Black Californians.

By combining rigorous research with authentic engagement, BPP helped ensure the task force had real community voices informing their policy recommendations – laying the foundation for a more just and equitable future. The upcoming 2026 statewide survey builds on this foundation, deepening understanding of how attitudes toward reparations are evolving and what meaningful repair and investment looks like in a changing political landscape.
