Writer/Performer Dr. Derrick I.M. Gilbert Passes Away at Age 45
November 9, 2015 – The Bunche Center acknowledges the passing of Writer/Performer Dr. Derrick I. M. Gilbert, who lost his battle with liver disease, November 1, 2015. He was 45 years old. Gilbert, also known as poet D-Knowledge, was the author of two books of poetry, Henna Man and Catch The Fire!!: A Cross-Generational Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry, published by The Berkley Publishing Group/Penguin Putnam, Inc. His music and poetry CD, All That and a Bag of Words was released by Quincy Jones’ Qwest Records/Warner Bros Records in 1995, and at the time, was one of the few poetry albums released by a major record label. Gilbert, who had a doctorate in sociology, taught at both UCLA and UC Berkeley.
